To be honest, I had high hopes which might’ve let me down. But overall, I can see how many have enjoyed this book. It just wasn’t entirely for me — I won’t yuck someone’s yum. BUT! It did inspire me to come up with another WIP!
Potential spoilers below:
I wasn’t looking for spice, but the little scenes of spice were abrupt and lack luster for *me*
Maybe I had more of a writer brain on vs a reader brain? *Shrugs*
I’m hypercritical when it comes to latiné rep in books, especially when written from presumably non-hispanic individuals, and I did not know there was an afrolatiné character before reading — I wasn’t really offended but I was not pleased or sold on it. It almost felt like it was added to, for a lack of better word, add “spice”. But I do appreciate the effort to add afrolatiné representation. The Spanish needed a bilingual editor too.
I feel like the characters needed more depth. The coming out story seemed underdeveloped.
On a positive note, I really enjoyed the first-person perspective, the writing itself was solid, and the pacing was good.
Overall, I’d recommend to a friend interested in a flirty, low stakes (to me) romance. Definitely one of its kind. We need more sapphic BIPOC representation in media and this is a step in the right direction.
*This is all subjective and just my honest opinion.*
